'Sherlock' season 4 air date, plot news 2016: New image released; 'life-changing things' coming
The BBC One hit detective TV series, "Sherlock," is soon expected to return to the small screen with its fourth season. Fans had to wait a couple of years for the continuation of this detective mystery thriller but the show and its crew sure know how to keep up the hype.

At the tail end of August, "Sherlock" provided fans who had long been anticipating the next chapter of the series with a sneak peek at what's to come in season 4. On Twitter, "Sherlock" released season 4's first look at the famed fictional detective, Sherlock Holmes (Benedict Cumberbatch), and his partner, Dr. John Watson (Martin Freeman).
As if further confirming previously released information, the promotional material resonated with the supposed darker and grittier image of the upcoming season. Many have also pointed out a striking feature in the promotional image – Dr. Watson's silvery hair, which may be an indicator of how grave the events in season 4 will be.
In an interview with BBC Breakfast, Mark Gatiss, who plays Sherlock's brother, Mycroft Holmes, claimed that the upcoming season is the "best one" that the show has thus far.
"It's very big chewy stuff, meaty," Gatiss said in the interview. "Lots of big life-changing things happen in it and all kinds of non-specific things like that I can say about it," the actor continued.
As to what these "big life-changing things" are, many claimed that it will have something to do with the possible return of the villainous Jim Moriarty (Andrew Scott), whose comeback had been hinted in the trailer released for the upcoming season.
It seems that fans would have to wait for "Sherlock" season 4 until they find out how big Moriarty's comeback will be and what Sherlock will do about it.
The fourth season of "Sherlock" is expected to premiere sometime in early 2017.
