The premiere episode of "Sherlock" season 4 is slated to air on New Year's Day, but fans are still worried about the fate of the show beyond the upcoming season.

In a previous interview, lead star Benedict Cumberbatch said that the series might draw to a close after the upcoming season. "It feels like the end of an era, to be honest. [Season 4] goes to a place where it will be pretty hard to follow on immediately," the actor was heard telling GQ UK in an interview as reported by Deadline back in October.

But showrunner Steven Moffat finally clarified in an interview with Entertainment Weekly that the actor was misquoted, saying that Cumberbatch did not really intend to say that he will have to say goodbye to his iconic character anytime soon.

According to Moffat, Cumberbatch's statements had been edited and twisted into a different context. "He was quite specific about being keen to carry on. He went on to say he's hard to get us all together. We want to keep the quality up. We haven't even seen this [season air] yet."

Yet the publication also quoted another statement from Cumberbatch's co-star Martin Freeman, who also hinted that the next season of "Sherlock" could be its last. This time, the report made sure that they had quoted Freeman accurately since it was taken from a radio interview with Jim Norton and Sam Roberts of Norton and Friends.

"This last [season] did have a feeling of — I don't know whether it has a finality to it — but it certainly had a feeling of a pause. It definitely had a feeling of that," Freeman stated.

While BBC has yet to confirm if "Sherlock" will be canceled after season 4, the premiere episode will be called "Sherlock: The Six Thatchers" based on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's short story called "The Adventure of the Six Napoleons."
