'Sons of Anarchy' spinoff news: FX Networks moves forward with 'Mayans MC' script development

The highly anticipated "Sons of Anarchy" spinoff, now titled "Mayans MC," is getting inches closer to reality as FX Networks has officially started script development for the project.
Kurt Sutter, the creator of the hit crime drama TV series, will develop the spinoff drama project together with Elgin James who will write the pilot script, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
"Mayans MC" will focus on the story of the Mayans Motorcycle Club. The Mayans were crucial recurring players on "Sons of Anarchy," FX's long-running and highest-rated series to date.
The spinoff project is described as "a dark, visceral family drama that takes a new look at the most American of icons, the 1 percent outlaw, this time, reflected through a Latino lens." Sutter revealed in a previous interview that the "Sons of Anarchy" spinoff will be a different show, with a unique tone, pace and storytelling. It will also not be set in Northern California unlike the original show, the publication noted.
"I wanted to find a strong, unique Latino voice," Sutter said, referring to James. "Because I didn't think a white guy from Jersey should be writing about Latin culture and traditions. Elgin is that voice."
James, whose directorial debut feature "Little Birds" won a National Board of Review award in 2012, helped found an anti-racist street gang in Boston in which he stayed for 15 years. Afterwards he moved to Los Angeles, where he honed his talent through the Sundance Institute Feature Film program. Aside from being tasked to pen the script for "Mayans MC," James is also set to helm "A Million Little Pieces" for John Wells and Plan B Entertainment.
So far, no other details have been revealed yet for the "Mayans MC" spinoff, but reports say that there could be even more "Sons of Anarchy" shows on the way. Actor Rusty Coones has recently hinted at more potential "Sons of Anarchy" material to be released, though he maintained that he's not "privy to all the inside stuff like that."
In an interview with 104.9 WXRX, Coones, who played Rane Quinn in early seasons of the show, stated: "There will be some things coming. No doubt about it. There's going to be some kind of mini-series or maybe a regular series. Maybe a movie, you know, based on the original series. Timelines might be a little different. Maybe a prequel on one of them. There's a lot of options with that to work with."
