Sony Pictures is planning on developing a movie adaptation of Naughty Dog's "Uncharted" games, and they have hired Joe Carnahan, director of movies like "Smokin' Aces" and "The A-Team" to write the screenplay.

In an interview with Variety, Carnahan explains that he will only be attached as the writer of the film, and not as a director. He says, "In a perfect world I would love to do both, but right now, I'm only on board to write the script."

Right now, Carnahan is preparing to direct "Bad Boys 3," and he says that he would've had the time to direct if the production schedule for "Uncharted" was pushed back. According to Geek Tyrant, the movie has been in development for years, and the likes of Mark Boal ("Zero Dark Thirty") and Cormac Wibberley ("National Treasure") have written their own versions of the script.

The "Uncharted" games follow the adventures of a dashing adventurer, Nathan Drake, who is a descendant of famed explorer Sir Francis Drake. The first game followed Drake on his quest to find El Dorado, only to be foiled by rival treasure-hunters. The game is a shooter/platformer and lets players control Drake as he battles enemy soldiers (and mutant Spaniards), jumps around the jungle, and drives a jet ski in order to survive.

The "Uncharted" games are very reminiscent of the "Tomb Raider" franchise, only instead of busty British bombshell Lara Croft, players get to control the Nathan-Fillion-esque adventurer Nathan Drake — with everything from the good looks to wisecracks.

Speaking of "Tomb Raider," a reboot of the franchise is currently in development and will star Alicia Vikander ("Ex Machina") as the titular Lara Croft. The movie will be based on the 2013 reboot of the game as well.

The "Uncharted" movie is still in early stages of pre-production, and fans can expect more updates about the movie in the future.
